PMO Maturity Assessment

XMO Services

Overview

Our client is the world’s largest nonprofit organization dedicated to funding blood cancer research and providing education and patient services for leukemia, lymphoma, and myeloma.

Challenge

Our client had recently established a PMO function. Organizational leadership recognized the benefits of a highly-functioning PMO, but it was not yet at a mature functioning state. With limited internal resources, it was essential to quickly align organizational priorities and ensure smooth, repeatable project delivery. The PMO identified multiple opportunities to improve their effectiveness but were unsure of the best approach.

ViTL was asked to evaluate the current state of the PMO and determine a roadmap to drive growth & maturity.

PMO Goals / Desired Outcomes:

  • Gain insight into industry best practices
  • Align PMO activities to the organization’s strategic plans
  • Validate the PMO vision and actions against the organization’s expectations while remaining operationally efficient

Solution

We utilized the ViTL PMO Maturity Model and Assessment Methodology to evaluate existing PMO Maturity scores across 6 performance pillars:

  • PMO Advocacy
  • Organizational Design
  • Portfolio Management
  • Project Lifecycle and Delivery Quality
  • Methodology Diversification
  • PPM Technology

The assessment includes PMO tools, technology, and documentation analysis, key stakeholder interviews, and evaluation against the maturity model.

The output is a findings and recommendation report detailing the maturity score for each performance pillar and an overall PMO maturity score. This is augmented with a data- and expert-driven recommendation for an operationalization roadmap.

Outcome

  • Organizational alignment of the PMO scope of services
  • New project governance, intake, prioritization, and scoping practices
  • Increase project throughput and quality – increased volume of successfully complete projects
  • Establish project management Standards of Practice
  • Documented skills/competencies to evaluate and forecast staffing needs
  • Visible portfolio health and resource capacity planning across the PMO
